Today's post includes nine all new players headed to my Football PC while also going towards the M Go Blue auto set:
Kraig Baker 2005 TK Legacy auto
I couldn't find much on Baker, but it looks like he was a kicker from '95-'98, and part of that time he shared PK duties with the more well-known Jay Feely.
Robert Cooper 2006 TK Legacy auto
Cooper was a HB (back when that position meant something very different) and it looks like he primarily played for Michigan in 1936, as that awesome old-timey photo can attest to. How awesome is it to have a (beautiful) signature from a guy who was playing in 1936?!
Fred Janke 2005 TK Legacy auto
Janke is another guy that hearkens back to the 30s--he appeared mostly as an OT (and a bit as a FB) from 1936-38. He was legendary Michigan Man and coach Fritz Crisler's first team captain during his senior year. After graduating he held several jobs including teaching and coaching football, plus being the mayor of Jackson, Michigan in the late 70s. He passed away five years ago at the ripe old age of 91, so I'm grateful to have the signature of another old-time Wolverine that died before I knew about him.
Walt Downing 2006 TK Legacy auto
Downing was a guard and center for a trio of excellent Michigan teams from 1975-77, all of which finished in the top 10. The Niners took him in the second round of the '78 draft, and he won a ring with them after Super Bowl XVI. He was with San Fran through the '83 season, then headed to the USFL. His son went on to play for the Buckeyes, but I guess we can forgive him for that.
Ed Muransky 2006 TK Legacy auto
Muransky was an OT that also played for some pretty good teams over the course of 1979-81, which included legendary coach Bo Schembechler's first bowl win at the end of the '80 season. One of five Wolverine All-Americans the following year, Ed was drafted by the Raiders in the fourth round of '82, and he played all three of his NFL seasons with them, scoring a ring for Super Bowl XVIII.
Ricky Powers 2006 TK Legacy auto
Powers was a standout RB in the early 90s, playing in Ann Arbor from 1990-93. At times he was overshadowed by other stars, including fellow rusher Tyrone Wheatley and 1991 Heisman-winner Desmond Howard. Still, he put up excellent numbers of his own considering he had to share carries, and Ricky compiled more than 2500 rushing yards and 19 TDs in his four seasons. He then went undrafted, was signed by the original Cleveland Browns, and was with them for one year before retiring and going into high school coaching.
Jack Meyer 2006 TK Legacy auto
It looks like Meyer was a QB for the 1938 squad that went 6-1-1, though teammate Forest Evashevski looks to have taken most of the starts. That team was a couple points short of perfect: the loss was a 7-6 contest at Minnesota while the tie was a scoreless game at home.
Mark and Mike Hammerstein 2006 TK Legacy autos
This pair of brothers appears back-to-back in the set, so why not show them off that way? Mark was a RG from 1983-86 while Mike played RT and DT from 1981-85. Mike became the more notable of the brothers, putting up big defensive numbers during his Michigan career, then getting drafted in the third round in '86 by the Bengals. He played with Cincy through the 1990 season before retiring.
Today's haul not only gives me a new total of 115 cards in the set and 176 different subjects overall in my football PC, but also sets a new milestone in that collection with 904 total hits! I'm now in the home stretch to reach 1,000, and you better believe I'll reach that before the year is up. For now, stay tuned to the final part of this series and nine more TK Legacy M Go Blue autos!
