If my mention of the film Cropsey during last week's episode of DVD Afternoon piqued your curiosity, you will want to listen to me describe it at greater length in my Hidden Gem DVD recommendation segment this week for CBC Radio. It's a documentary by a pair of filmmakers named Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio that manages simultaneously to be an investigation into a series of child murders from the ’70s and ’80s which resulted in the possible wrongful conviction of an innocent man, a portrait of Staten Island and its status as a sort of dumping ground for everything New York wanted to shove out of sight (garbage as well as human beings), and a meditation on society's deep-seated willingness to believe more deeply in urban legends than concrete facts. The movie has flaws and perhaps indulges in more than its fair share of speculation, but it's a gripping, provocative watch all the same.
