Since the hiatus of the insanely creative The Black Eyed Peas, I miss them so much guys, lead frontman will.i.am has experienced a string of hits and misses with his own solo career. Though he has the popular Britney Spears collabo "Scream & Shout" under his belt, the track's parent album came and went without much noise even with the help of Justin Bieber, Nicole Scherzinger, Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus.
Following a deluxe edition release of #willpower, the producer makes his return with the A.R Rahman-influenced, new artist Cody Wise-assisted "Birthday", an electro/hip-hop hybrid of a track that thankfully becomes one of the more infectious releases from the catalog of will.i.am. Though flooded with ridiculous lyrics, the new single thrives due to the catchy beat and the vocals of Wise who has a great shot at becoming the next big thing.
"Birthday", or "It's My Birthday", depending on the publication you are reading, may have immediately scared music lovers when first announced, however, thanks to an early 90-second snippet, it appeared will.i.am may have actually released a good song. "It's my birthday, it's my birthday, I'mma spend my money, it's my birthday, it's my birthday, I'mma live my fantasy," Wise sings on the chorus of a song which seems to have a simple message of having a crazy good time. The accompanying music video is the perfect visual representation.
Recreating many of the instantly iconic viral Vine videos, will.i.am and Wise are shown in insane and hilarious scenarios. From pizza twerking to using scandalous x-ray goggles, from lighting candles with flatulence to slapping strangers with dollar bills, the video is the perfect dose of chaos. With his long and extensive, ever evolving career, you must commend will.i.am, but not all his material has been Grade A level. "Birthday" has some charting potential, it doesn't take itself too seriously and could be a staple at those annoying college parties over the summer.
